Granite Construction has secured a contract to construct a modernised John Wilkie Safety Roadside Rest Area along the Interstate 40 (I-40) corridor in California, US.

Awarded by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the contract is valued at about $45m.

Funding for this project is sourced from Caltrans and included in Granite’s second quarter committed and awarded projects.

This initiative is the fifth in a series of projects aimed at improving safety and infrastructure on I-40.

It involves the construction of an updated rest area for motorists, designed to provide a safe space for travellers to rest and recover.

Granite regional operations vice-president Bill Moore said: “We are committed to making I-40 safer for all who travel through this area.

“Our relationship with Caltrans has been fostered and strengthened through our continued work along the I-40 corridor, and we are excited to contribute further to this vital infrastructure.”

Previous improvements along I-40 have included median fill-ins, slope flattening adjacent to the roadway, and the creation of recovery areas for vehicles that leave the highway.

Granite will be sourcing materials from Desert Cities Asphalt, including 12,200 tonnes of asphalt for the construction of parking lots and ramps.

The project is scheduled to commence in September 2024 and reach completion by January 2026.

Granite was awarded a separate contract by Caltrans, worth approximately $38m, earlier in August 2024 for the Highway 101 Segment 4E South project.

This project involves the addition of peak-hour high-occupancy vehicle lanes and the reconstruction of all elements of the existing highway through southern Santa Barbara.
