Granite has secured a contract worth approximately $27m to widen shoulders and resurface a 19-mile section of State Route 33 (SR 33) in Kern County, California, US.

The contract has been commissioned by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

The project, funded by the Caltrans, is included in Granite’s second-quarter committed and awarded projects.

It aims to improve road safety and driving conditions from the SR 33/SR 46 intersection at Blackwells Corner to just north of McKittrick.

The scope of work encompasses expanding the existing two-lane road with 5ft shoulders on both sides, localised asphalt repairs, and a hot mix asphalt (HMA) overlay across the entire stretch.

Additionally, the project includes the replacement of 19 drainage systems, the construction of two new box culverts, five new headwalls, and approximately 800 linear feet of new storm drain pipe.

Granite’s Solari Sand and Gravel facility in Kern County will supply 115,160 tons of HMA for the project.

Granite Materials senior vice-president Brad Estes said: “Our vertically integrated business model provides a reliable supply chain of asphalt and aggregates to the project, which is critical to the project’s timely completion.”

Work is set to commence in November 2024, with completion anticipated by January 2026.

Granite Regional Operations vice-president Larry Camilleri said: “This project builds on the successful completion of many projects in Kern County over the past 50 years.

“Our team is excited to deliver another important project, on time, for Caltrans and the travelling public.”

This contract award comes after Granite secured a contract to construct a segment of a 40-mile pathway linking Palm Springs to Thermal in the Coachella Valley, Southern California.
