Gilbane and Purdue University Fort Wayne (PFW) have entered into a partnership to develop new student housing near Ginsberg Hall on PFW’s North Campus, US. 

The public-private partnership is aimed at addressing the need for expanded student housing options at the university.  

The project team includes Gilbane Development Company as developer, Gilbane Building Company as construction manager, AVB as design-builder, and Progressive as architect. 

The four-storey, 213,000ft² apartment complex will offer a range of housing options, from studios to four-bedroom units, providing a total of 600 beds across 176 units.  

Approximately half of these beds will be reserved for students contracting with the university for housing while the other half will be available for direct leasing to other area students. 

The complex will feature an array of indoor and outdoor amenities designed to promote student health and wellness.

The project will incorporate energy-efficient appliances, lighting, construction waste management strategies, and more. 

In addition, the design of the complex aims to have minimal impact on the surrounding neighbourhood.  

It will include a public drop-off area for campus shuttles and rideshares, as well as parking with more than 450 spaces, adding to the multiple pedestrian connections. 

Gilbane Building Company vice-president and business leader Lynn Rogien said: “Our ‘One company’ approach creates high-quality student housing, complete with the desired amenities expected by today’s students. This project will incorporate high performance and sustainability as core focus, maximising design and construction quality, waste reduction, realising energy savings, and water conservation methods.” 

Preliminary work on this project, estimated to cost between $90m and $100m, is expected to begin in October, with completion expected in the late 2026 semester.  

The financing for this project will be secured through a private non-profit foundation established for this initiative. 

In April this year, the company completed the construction of the University of Virginia’s School of Data Science building.
