The UK’s Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has awarded a £65m ($81.2m) contract to construction company Galliford Try to build single living accommodation (SLA) at Royal Air Force (RAF) Digby in Lincolnshire, England.

The project will deliver a total of 276 new SLA for junior ranks, with energy-efficient living spaces.

This contract involves the construction of four new accommodation blocks, each equipped with 69 single ensuite rooms, kitchenettes, drying rooms, laundry facilities, and social spaces.

The design prioritises carbon efficiency, aligning with the Ministry of Defence’s effort to achieve net-zero emissions.

Energy-saving measures to feature in the SLA project include solar panels, air-source heat pumps for heating, and energy recovery systems from shower wastewater.

This project will also include temperature-controlled heating zones, energy-efficient LED lighting, and provisions for electric vehicle charging points.

The contract also covers the development of car parking, street lighting, and outdoor communal spaces.

Galliford Try alongside Arcadis, which is serving as the technical support provider, plans to engage local suppliers and labour to stimulate the local economy.

Construction of the SLA is set to begin next month.

DIO principal project manager John Weatherby said: “It’s fantastic to have reached this important milestone in our goal to transform the accommodation provision at RAF Digby with some high-quality new rooms for junior ranks serving at the station.

“We look forward to working with Galliford Try on the designs as we prepare for the start of construction in the coming months.”

Galliford Try CEO Bill Hocking said: “We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with the DIO to deliver this much-needed facility for those serving at RAF Digby.

“We have a strong track record in providing this kind of facility to the armed forces and look forward to ensuring the personnel receive the high-quality living spaces they deserve.”

In October 2024, DIO and the Royal Navy launched a £99.5m construction project at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall.
