Foster + Partners has released an updated master plan of the $5bn Centennial Yards project in Downtown Atlanta, the US.

The latest design tweaks the previous plan to increase pedestrian access and ensure better blending with adjacent communities in style and scale. It was developed following consultation exercises and a detailed study of the surrounding neighbourhoods.

The company will continue to work with US-based architecture firm Perkins+Will to further refine the plan.

Centennial Yards involves transforming a 50-acre area of parking lots and former railyards into a mixed-use development featuring buildings, amenities and public spaces.

The area is located near the city’s key attractions such as the Atlanta Hawks’ State Farm Arena and Mercedes-Benz Stadium, as well as Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) stations that connects the site with the rest of the city.

Foster + Partners senior partner Armstrong Yakubu said: “We are extremely excited to be part of Centennial Yards. We believe this project is a unique opportunity to stitch the fabric of this great city together with state-of-the-art buildings, amenities and public spaces that will transform this part of Downtown Atlanta.

“Creating a new 50-acre walkable, mixed-use city centre, it is designed to welcome pedestrians, bring neighbourhoods together and to be sustainable for generations to come.

“Furthering the city’s wider renewal efforts, the new park adjacent to Five Points Station exemplifies our sustainable focus. We look forward to working with Centennial Yards Company on this rare opportunity to create a truly forward-looking plan for Atlanta.”
