UK-based architecture firm Foster + Partners has unveiled the design for the new Red Sea Airport in Saudi Arabia.
The airport is expected to serve one million visitors by 2030.

The firm said that the airport terminal is expected to give passengers a tranquil and memorable experience during their visit.
Foster + Partners studio head Gerard Evenden said: “The Red Sea Airport has been envisaged as a gateway to one of the most unique resorts in the world and an integral part of the visitor experience. Inspired by the colours and textures of the desert landscape, the sustainable design seeks to create a calm and luxurious journey through the terminal.
“It will become a transit hub for visitors coming in by both land and air. We look forward to working with the Red Sea Development Company to fulfil the vision for this ambitious one-of-a-kind project.”
The design of the terminal focuses on giving passengers a luxurious and personalised experience of a private aircraft terminal through smaller and intimate spaces.
A form of the roof shells, which are inspired by desert dunes and cantilevers on the landside and airside, will provide shade to travellers.
An internal green oasis with a garden will provide resort-like feel within the airport terminal. The airport will operate on 100% renewable energy.
Upon arrival, passengers will get the Red Sea experience as they would follow the natural flow down through an oasis setting towards the Welcome Centre, where they will be welcomed to the Red Sea Resort.
Once the security and immigration procedures are completed within a short time, the checked-in baggage will be directly sent to the resorts.
Given that the departure procedures take longer time compared to the arrival time, spacious and relaxed spaces will be created to ensure a comfortable journey for passengers.
Designed as a series of pods, the five departure suites will provide an easy transition for passengers from their cars to the aircraft. Once passengers are dropped off outside the terminal, they will be able to enter one of the departure pods, which will feature spas and restaurants.
After a check-in process at the resort, the baggage will then be directly loaded onto the aircraft.
