Japan-based Mitsubishi Chemical Group has awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to engineering and construction company Fluor.

The EPC contract is for Mitsubishi’s SoarnoL ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) plant in Saltend Chemicals Park, Hull, UK.

The scope of this project includes renovations to the current plant, as well as the installation of a second manufacturing line, which will boost capacity by 21,000tpa.

Once the plant is built and starts operating, the Saltend Chemicals Park EVOH plant is expected to become the world’s second-largest SoarnoL site for the group.

Fluor booked its undisclosed share of the contract in the second quarter of this year.

Fluor Energy Solutions’ segment president Jim Breuer said: “Fluor values our relationship with Mitsubishi Chemical Group.

“We are excited to be a part of this important project that will reduce food waste, resulting in decreased methane emissions from landfills and a lower carbon footprint.

“As we collaborate with our clients to build a better world, this leads to positive societal benefits for people and our planet.”

SoarnoL is a high gas-barrier resin that is used in the production of packaging materials that assist in extending the flavour and quality of food, resulting in minimal food waste.

Furthermore, SoarnoL-containing multilayer films are certified as highly recyclable when combined with Mitsubishi Chemical Group’s recycling compatibiliser Soaresin.

Mechanical completion of the projects is set for mid-2025.
