The Australian national government has released expressions of interest (EOIs) for engaging a managing contractor and principal consultant for the construction of the new A$142m ($92.8m) Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Centre in the country.

The sports facility is expected to host basketball preliminaries during the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and will feature at least 6,000 seats for spectators.

The release of EOIs for the managing contractor and principal consultant marks the commencement of the procurement process, which will progress to shortlisting and formal tender invitations later this year.

Construction is anticipated to start in late 2025.

This follows earlier EOIs for the A$148m Sunshine Coast Stadium upgrade and the A$215m new Chandler Indoor Sports Centre and Precinct Works, which attracted more than 20 EOIs from qualified professionals.

Situated in the expanding Kawana Sports Precinct, the Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Centre will feature 11 multisport courts and versatile areas for daily use by athletes.

Sports such as basketball, volleyball, netball, pickleball, futsal, and badminton will be accommodated both before and after the Olympic games.

Apart from catering to community sports, the centre will also have the capacity to host significant sporting, recreational, and entertainment events.

Consequently, Kawana Sports Precinct, which also includes the upgraded Sunshine Coast Stadium, is set to become a hub for both community and elite sports.

The aforementioned stadium will host football preliminaries and quarterfinal matches during the Brisbane 2032 Games.

The project is expected to generate more than 480 full-time equivalent jobs throughout its planning, design, and construction phases.

It is being jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments through the A$1.87bn Minor Venues Program and will also benefit from an investment by Sunshine Coast Council, which exceeds A$25m.

This funding will enhance the facility with air conditioning, retractable seating, broadcast lighting, and additional amenities such as a café and gym area.

The development responds to the Sunshine Coast’s growing population and the heightened demand for quality indoor court facilities.

Queensland State Development and Infrastructure Minister Grace Grace said: “Indoor sports currently account for 12 of 28 Olympic sports and 11 of the 22 Paralympic sports in [the] games, so it’s important we allow our aspiring athletes [the] best opportunity to train in high-performance facilities and develop their dreams in their own backyard.”
