Clark Construction Group, alongside the SmithGroup + HKS Joint Venture, marked the start of construction of the new El Paso VA Health Care Centre at Fort Bliss, Texas.

The groundbreaking ceremony was also attended by US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Fort Worth District.

The new 492,000ft² ambulatory care facility will be situated on the William Beaumont Army Medical Centre campus.

It is a collaborative effort between the VA and USACE, who selected the design-build team for its construction.

Construction will be supported by trade subcontractor partners such as MMC Contractors, Bergelectric, Gate Precast and SteelFab.

This also includes local companies such as Jordan Foster Construction, Glass House, and Hardy Hole Drilling.

SmithGroup leads the charge in interior architecture and design, with HKS at the helm of exterior architecture and sustainable design certification.

Additional design partners include Cagley and Associates, Capital Engineering Consultants, Culinary Advisors, Focus EDG, IMEG, Lammars & Associates, Mazzetti and Moreno Cardenas.

Clark Construction Central Group CEO Cara Lanigan said: “Our design-build team is proud to join forces with USACE and VA on this integral project, which will enhance access to top-tier medical care for over 54,000 veterans in the El Paso area.”

With an anticipated completion date in 2028, the health centre will integrate 47 departments from the active service at Beaumont Army Medical Centre into the El Paso VA Health Care Centre.

The project scope encompasses a new central utility plant and enhancements to utilities, stormwater management, and parking facilities for the entire Fort Bliss campus.

Designed as a six-storey structure, the health centre will feature a centralised entry canopy on its northern façade.

Materials such as rock, stone, and textured precast concrete are integrated into the building’s façade.

The new health centre aims for a 30% energy reduction compared to existing building codes and seeks to exceed LEED Silver certification.
