Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the completion of construction of 20 out of a planned 40 air-conditioned rest areas for delivery riders across the emirate.

This initiative is part of RTA’s efforts to enhance road safety, promote well-being, and reduce the risks of road incidents among delivery personnel.

The rest areas, which are located in delivery service zones such as Hessa Street, Al Barsha Heights, Al Karama, and more, were chosen based on operational data analysis and consultation with delivery companies.

RTA director general and board of executive directors chair Mattar Al Tayer said: “RTA is committed to providing a safe and comfortable environment for delivery drivers. This initiative aims to enhance traffic safety for all road users and achieve the targeted indicators of the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy with its ‘Zero Fatalities’ vision to rank Dubai the best in the world in terms of traffic safety.

“The construction of rest areas aligns with the significant growth in the delivery sector in recent years, addressing the public’s increasing demand for goods. As of the end of last June, the number of companies providing delivery services by motorcycles in Dubai reached 2,535 with a total of 40,088 delivery bikes in operation.”

These facilities are designed to offer comfort to delivery riders during their waiting periods for new orders, thereby boosting happiness ratings and encouraging adherence to traffic regulations.

Al Tayer added that the rest areas include air-conditioned spaces, snack vending machines, water dispensers, and mobile phone charging stations.

These can accommodate up to ten people and have ample motorcycle parking spaces adjacent to the facilities.

The structures are built to minimise sunlight penetration while maintaining insulation and not obstructing the view.

This announcement comes after RTA, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, completed the construction of ten out of 16 truck rest stops, earlier this month.
