Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract to construct direct entry and exit points for Dubai Harbour, in partnership with Shamal Holding.

The initiative is in line with the directives of the United Arab Emirates’ vice-president and prime minister and Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The contract award took place under the guidance of Dubai Crown Prince and executive council chair Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Shamal Holding CEO Abdulla Binhabtoor said: “As we continue to upgrade and invest in the infrastructure and facilities of Dubai Harbour, we appreciate the support and partnership of the Roads and Transport Authority, as well as our wider ecosystem of partners, contractors, and developers.”

The Dh431m ($117.34m) contract involves the construction of a 1,500m bridge with two lanes in each direction, connecting Sheikh Zayed Road to Dubai Harbour.

It aims to enhance the area’s road network infrastructure in response to Dubai’s urban expansion and demographic growth.

The bridge is designed to accommodate up to 6,000 vehicles per hour, thereby improving the flow of traffic.

RTA executive directors board chair and director general Mattar Al Tayer said: “The project provides a direct entry/exit for Dubai Harbour to ease the movement of visitors and residents.”

The project also includes upgrades at four intersections, including the fifth intersection on Sheikh Zayed Road and the intersection of Al Falak Street with Al Naseem Street.

This further comprises the intersection of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street with Al Naseem Street and Dubai Harbour Street.

These improvements are expected to reduce travel time from 12 to three minutes upon completion.

In May this year, the RTA revealed the completion of road and lighting enhancements in the Al Qusais Industrial areas 1 through 5.
