The Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has commenced construction on Panay Island’s sports complex at Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) in the country.
The project includes the construction of a 1,400m² multipurpose building on a 3,064m² lot in the municipality of Sara within Iloilo province.
Designed to become a hub for athletic training and competitions, the facility is aimed at enhancing sports in the Western Visayas region.
Upon completion, the sports complex will feature a stadium, a 400m track field, and a 10,346m² football field, capable of hosting various athletic events.
DPWH Region VI director Sanny Boy Oropel said: “This project is a beacon of progress for NISU and other neighbouring towns as it will foster a renewed interest in sports among the youth, promote physical education, and serve as a venue for significant regional sporting events.”
The facility is expected to also attract tourists and sports enthusiasts from across Panay Island.

By GlobalDataThe DPWH Iloilo 3rd District Engineering Office (DEO) is implementing the project with an initial budget of 100m pesos ($1.77m).
In a separate announcement, the DPWH said it has completed the construction of the Causeway with a Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) Ramp and Trestle (Phase II) Project in a coastal community in the municipality of Paluan.
The causeway structure with a RoRo ramp in Barangay Marikit aims to facilitate the movement of local goods and product trading to neighbouring islands.
The project was carried out by the DPWH Mindoro Occidental DEO.
It included the construction of a trestle with mooring bollards and a reinforced concrete platform in the causeway to prevent vessel collisions, ensuring the structure’s resilience and durability.
DPWH Regional Office IV-B director Gerald Pacanan said: “The installation of the RoRo ramp is a crucial measure that will aid local businesses, fishermen, and merchants by providing access and enhanced security for rowboats and essential watercraft, fortifying the region’s opportunities for sustainable livelihood.”
With the completion of the causeway, residents in Barangay Marikit have experienced improvements in their economic activities.
The causeway structure was completed at a cost of 96.49m pesos, funded under the General Appropriations Act of 2023.
Last month, the DPWH announced that the Navotas Polytechnic College building project in Navotas City entered its final phase of civil works.
