The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the Philippines has completed the widening of a section of the Dancalan-Candoni-Damutan Valley Road in Ilog, Negros Occidental.
The 33.7 million pesos ($590,000) project, managed by DPWH’s Negros Occidental 3rd District Engineering Office (DEO), expanded a 766m stretch of the road, adding lanes to accommodate increased vehicle traffic and improve the transportation of goods and services.
The road widening is expected to ease traffic flow and benefit local farmers and small business owners by reducing delays in transporting their products.
The project also included the installation of pipe culverts, stone masonry, rubble concrete, and reflectorised thermoplastic pavement markings.
Additionally, DPWH has announced the completion of a domestic river control structure to mitigate flooding in barangay Jamorawon within the province of Milagros.
DPWH Regional Office 5 director Virgilio C Eduarte reported to DPWH secretary Manuel M Bonoan that the project was executed in the centre of the remote area, which has been historically prone to flooding.
The construction included a 12m-long and 7m-wide spillway, which doubles as a crossing path and is equipped with concrete slope protection and a reinforced concrete pipe culvert for drainage.
The project, led by DPWH’s Masbate 2nd DEO and district engineer Denis C Cagomoc, also features a 233.72m revetment along the riverbanks.
Eduarte said: “With the spillway bridge and revetment structures completed, residents of barangay Jamorawon are now able to safely cross the river to access its more remote communities.”
Earlier this month, DPWH completed a significant domestic road improvement project in Kabugao, valued at 73.01 million pesos, to enhance local connectivity and support the region’s development.
