The £21m ($26.61m) redevelopment of Catterick’s town centre in England has moved forward with the demolition of existing buildings on Shute Road.

This marks a pivotal phase in the project, paving the way for the construction of new community facilities, expected to commence early in the upcoming year.

North Yorkshire Council is closely involved in the demolition process.

The council’s leader, along with representatives from the UK’s Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and Catterick Garrison, recently observed the progress on-site.

Preparatory work such as the removal of asbestos and stripping out of internal fixtures is almost complete.

The redevelopment will not only introduce a new community building and a multiuse events space but also aims to enhance the local environment.

This project includes upgrades to the site’s landscaping, pavements, cycle paths, Coronation Park, and play areas.

It is designed to benefit both military personnel and the wider public, reflecting a partnership between North Yorkshire Council and DIO.

DIO is funding the demolition phase while North Yorkshire Council has secured central government funding for the redevelopment itself.

The project covers a four-acre area around Shute Road and has been allocated £19m from the government’s Levelling Up Fund.

This funding is intended to transform the town centre into a more inviting space for the community and to encourage further investment in the region.

North Yorkshire Council leader and councillor Carl Les said: “Demolition work paves the way for us to start work on this exciting project for Catterick which will provide great new facilities for the town and bring with it new jobs for local people.”

Catterick Garrison commander Lt Col Charlie Anderson RA said: “The demolition works at Shute Road are a significant milestone in the regeneration of the town centre.

“Catterick is home to the largest army bases in the country and these new community facilities will improve the lives of military personnel and families stationed here, as well as benefitting local residents.”
