Construction has commenced on a new £15.9m ($20.5m) extra-care housing scheme in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, transforming the site of a former police station into a modern residential development.
The project, spearheaded by housing provider Preferred Homes and being built by Deeley Construction, a domestic construction and development group, is set to offer 73 apartments for affordable rent.
This initiative is set to rejuvenate the heart of Hucknall, bringing life to the previously derelict site.
The development will comprise two buildings, one three-storey and the other four-storey, featuring a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments.
Designed with the residents’ well-being in mind, the scheme includes communal spaces such as a lounge, dining area, multipurpose room, and a bistro.
Focusing on sustainability, the project incorporates environmentally friendly features, including a rooftop photovoltaic system to harness solar energy, air-source heat pumps, and four electric vehicle charging points to encourage green transportation.
As the UK’s housing and regeneration agency Homes England’s investment partner, Preferred Homes has secured partial funding for the project through the Affordable Homes Programme.
Deeley Construction operations director Chris Newman said: “The development is only two minutes from the historic market town centre, positioning it right at the heart of community in Hucknall.
“When completed it will see the regeneration of a brownfield site to provide high-quality, comfortable and sustainable homes for residents.”
Preferred Homes property director Richard Frank said: “Hucknall marks our first development in the North Midlands, and our second constructed by Deeley Construction.
“We know this will be an invaluable asset for the community, so it is fantastic to get spades in the ground.
“Deeley understands our ambition when it comes to constructing high-quality extra-care housing that supports the health and well-being of vulnerable older people, and we look forward to bringing that vision to fruition at Watnall Road.”
In May 2024, Deeley Construction began work on a £19.6m supported living development in Hampton, England, building homes for Anchor, a non-profit housing provider.
