Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded a civil contract to the joint venture (JV) of Shanghai Tunnel Engineering (Singapore) and Obayashi.
The contract, worth approximately S$530m ($393.40m), entails the design and construction of the CR14 Turf City station and associated tunnels under the Cross Island Line Phase 2 (CRL2).
The JV previously secured a contract for tunnel construction between Fairways Drive and Sin Ming Walk in December 2022.
The CRL, Singapore’s eighth mass rapid transit line, will connect areas across the eastern, north-eastern, and western parts of the city, serving both current and future developments.
It will be fully underground and constructed across three phases.
The first phase, which began construction following its 2019 announcement, includes 12 stations over 29km and is set to be completed by 2030.

By GlobalDataThe second phase, introduced in September 2022, will add another six underground stations over approximately 15km.
The engineering studies for the third phase of the CRL are currently underway, with further details to be revealed upon completion.
The CR14 station is situated underground along Turf Club Road near the former Grandstand.
Construction work is said to be challenging due to the complex soil conditions, including the harder ground conditions of the Bukit Timah granite formation.
Prior to the start of excavation and construction works, earth retaining and stabilising structures will be put in place to ensure the safety and stability of the ground.
The LTA, together with its contractors, will closely monitor the construction activities and enforce mitigation measures as needed to minimise disruption.
In preparation for the works near Eng Neo Forest, an environmental impact assessment was conducted.
The LTA engaged with nature groups to identify local flora and fauna and to establish measures to mitigate the project’s environmental impacts.
These include the installation of barriers to protect fauna and road-calming measures to ensure the safety of both wildlife and construction site traffic.
Construction of the CR14 station is set to commence in the third quarter (Q3) of 2024, with the CRL2 passenger service expected to launch in 2032.
Last year, the LTA awarded a design-and-build contract to Gamuda Berhad’s Singaporean branch for the domestic West Coast Station and associated tunnels.
