UK-based United Utilities has chosen infrastructure solutions company Costain as one of seven partners to deliver its new water and wastewater infrastructure investment programme.

The other six partners are a VolkerStevin/Jacobs joint venture C2V, Jacobs, Mott MacDonald Bentley, Murphy, Kier Integrated Services, and MWH Treatment.

The seven partners will deliver projects worth £3bn ($3.83bn) during the 2025-2030 Asset Management Period 8 (AMP8), which has a potential further five-year extension to 2035.

The projects include upgrades to wastewater treatment works and reducing storm overflow activations, among others.

Costain and the partners will form an integrated enterprise delivery organisation, focusing on upgrades to United Utilities’ infrastructure and non-infrastructure assets.

United Utilities capital delivery director Jane Simpson said: “We’re really excited that we have secured some strong delivery partners to ensure we can deliver on our ambitious plans to transform infrastructure and services in the North West [England].”

Costain will offer a range of services, from project management to construction and asset supportability.

The company will provide engineering and design services, including ground investigations, geotechnical studies, and tunnel design, among others.

Additionally, Costain will ensure regulatory compliance through coordination of construction activities and more.

The partnership aims to deliver services in an environmentally sustainable, economically beneficial, and socially responsible manner.

This approach is intended to create sustainable long-term value for all.

Costain CEO Alex Vaughan said: “We’re delighted that this new contract win extends our relationship with United Utilities and that we can bring our leading strategic expertise to support upgrades of its critical infrastructure.

“This announcement builds on our growing positions with the leading water companies as they prepare for the vital AMP8 investment period.”

The contract with Costain builds on a previous agreement for AMP8, announced last year.

Earlier in the year, Northumbrian Water Group selected Costain alongside six other partners to support the delivery of AMP8 and future projects.
