The University of Manchester in the UK has announced the completion of construction on its engineering campus.
The conclusion of the base build phase marked the latest development with regard to the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD).

MECD was delivered by a collaborative team of builders, architects and engineers and represents the single largest construction project ever completed by a higher education institution in the UK.
Mecanoo, with support from Penoyre & Prasad, was responsible for the design of the campus, with detailed design during the technical and construction stages provided by BDP.
Arup provided multidisciplinary engineering services and Balfour Beatty served as the main contractor. Buro Four was the project manager while Buro Happold acted as the environmental sustainability advisor for the project.
University of Manchester Director of Estates Diana Hampson said: “This is a hugely significant milestone for MECD and we are delighted that the initial construction phase is now complete.
“MECD will create facilities that will put the University at the forefront of engineering globally, and we are proud to provide such an exceptional space for our exceptional people.”
The engineering campus incorporates the eight-storey 80,000m² Engineering Building A; Engineering Building B and the James Chadwick Building (on Upper Brook Street); refurbished Grade II listed Oddfellows Hall; and the York Street Building.
It also has purpose-designed blended lecture theatres, teaching laboratories, student workshops and a range of spaces for supporting social engagement initiatives.
MECD appointed a dedicated Environmental Sustainability Advisor to develop and drive the University’s comprehensive sustainability targets including a BREEAM Excellent rating, a new active travel hub and green roof, throughout the life cycle of the project.
