Construction work has begun of a new sporting facility in East Dunbartonshire in UK.

The East Dunbartonshire Council is leading a team of partners to create Kirkintilloch Community Sports Complex on a brownfield location to the west of Park Burn, in the Southbank area of the town.

Robertson Construction has been awarded a contract to deliver the new project.

Preparatory works have been underway for conducting survey and clearing the project location, as well as removing debris and obstructions, and for laying foundations for the scheme.

Kirkintilloch Community Sports Complex is slated for completion in September 2022.

It will feature a full-size, artificial 3G sports pitch with floodlighting; main stand and VIP stand spectator seating; pavilion building including café space and toilets; and car parking.

East Dunbartonshire Council joint leader and councillor Andrew Polson said, “It’s fantastic to see work taking place on this superb new facility, which will be a first-class addition to our range of sporting assets in East Dunbartonshire. I’m delighted to see the progress being made to bring a previously vacant brownfield site back into viable use.”

The council is funding the £5m scheme, with support from the Scottish Government’s Vacant and Derelict Land Investment Programme.

Robertson Construction Central West regional managing director Andy McLinden said: “East Dunbartonshire Council is showing great commitment to the local community through the provision of these new facilities. As the contractor of choice, we will become a significant part of the community in the coming months as we transform this former brownfield site into a first-class sports complex.”

The sports complex is being created within the Major Works Scotland & Construction Framework provided by public-sector owned procurement specialist SCAPE Scotland.
