CNY Alliance has been awarded a $313.5m construction contract for the Interstate 81 (I-81) Viaduct Project in New York, US.

This contract, the fourth in a series of eight, covers construction on the Community Grid along streets on Syracuse’s eastside, particularly in the 15th Ward neighbourhood.

One year since its ground-breaking, the I-81 Viaduct Project’s first and second construction contracts are already underway.

These initial phases are reconstructing the northern and southern interchanges of the existing I-81/I-481 into BL 81 and I-81.

The third contract, awarded in May this year, has already seen construction activity increase on the northside and Inner Harbor city streets.

New York’s governor Kathy Hochul said: “It is not lost on me that the next focal point in the construction of the Community Grid was once a thriving community of Black and Jewish families, torn apart when I-81 was built through the heart of their neighbourhood.”

The focus of the latest contract is to create a direct connection to University Hill, which includes the construction of a new interchange along I-690 westbound at Crouse Avenue.

This will provide an additional access point for Central New York commuters.

To manage the expected traffic increase, Crouse Avenue will be widened from two to three lanes, enhancing north and southbound travel.

Furthermore, Irving Avenue will undergo a transformation to support traffic flow to University Hill.

Currently terminating at East Fayette Street, Irving Avenue will be extended to Erie Boulevard East and expanded to three lanes.

Future contract six will see the creation of a new interchange along I-690 eastbound to the extended Irving Avenue, offering a second access point for commuters.

The new interchanges at Crouse and Irving Avenues are designed to alleviate the congestion currently experienced along I-81, particularly at the Harrison/Adams interchanges.

These improvements are also expected to resolve the bottleneck on Almond Street, the future Business Loop 81, caused by the influx of commuters headed to University Hill.

Contract four also includes the commencement of upgrades to Syracuse’s and Onondaga County’s drainage systems.

This involves installing approximately half a mile of drainage trunk line on Erie Boulevard East to separate stormwater and sewage, with the former being directed to Onondaga Creek and the latter to the county’s wastewater treatment facility.

Additional aspects of contract four encompass the replacement of two bridges along I-690 over Lodi Street and Crouse Avenue.

The project will receive funding from both federal and state sources.
