China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has released guidelines banning the construction of skyscrapers that are more than 500m high, reported Global Times.
The country will also strictly restrict buildings over 250m high.
The guidelines were issued in the new urbanisation outline under the 14th Five-Year Plan 2021-25.
These guidelines are intended to enhance city landscape, and restrict extreme architectural scale.

By GlobalDataThe statistics of the US non-profit organisation, Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, show that the Asian country currently has 2,928 buildings more than 150m high, 953 skyscrapers more than 200m high and 102 buildings taller than 300m.
In May 2021, SEG Plaza, a 356m high building in Shenzen, swayed due to various reasons. Consequently, authorities had suspended the use of the tower for four months, reported Global Times.
Last October, China imposed limits on construction of super high-rise buildings, as it aimed to eliminate the wasteful ‘vanity’ projects of local governments.
The China Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural development and the Ministry of Emergency Management had then stated that cities with less than three million population would be restricted from building skyscrapers taller than 150m.
These cities are required to seek special exemptions for construction of a skyscraper that is beyond 150m.
Furthermore, cities with more than three million populations would be restricted to construct buildings that are taller than 250m.
Special exemptions could be sought by these cities for building skyscraper taller than 250m and less than 500m.
The ministries also stated it would impose “lifelong accountability” on officials who approve projects that are non-compliant with the new rules.
