Health insurance firm Centene has announced plans to build new East Coast regional headquarters and technology hub in Charlotte, North Carolina in the US, with an investment of $1bn.

The decision, which follows completing of a comprehensive evaluation process, is expected to initially create 3,237 jobs in North Carolina.

Scheduled for completion by 2032, the new regional headquarters and technology hub will comprise over one million ft² of office and meeting space, a corporate boardroom, a childcare and early education centre.

It will also include a variety of dining venues, auditorium, fitness centre, and a stand-alone building housing a corporate learning and development centre, named Centene Tech University.

Construction on the project is scheduled to commence in August 2020. Centene plans to create 6,000 new jobs in the Charlotte community over time.

Centene president and CEO, chairman Michael Neidorff said: “We are pleased to expand our partnership with the city of Charlotte, the county of Mecklenburg, and the state of North Carolina. We look forward to many years of collective growth and innovation.”

The new headquarters is planned to be built in phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion in the second half of 2022.

In a press statement, Centene added: “In anticipation of this phase, the company is committed to expanding its existing footprint in the Charlotte metro area immediately and will begin recruiting for roles across multiple areas, such as information technology, finance, compliance, health economics, business analytics, human resources, quality and clinical positions.”

The campus buildings will be designed with a focus on providing open spaces, natural light, and embracing the site’s natural features.
