The Causeway Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridges project in Western Australia (WA) has reached a milestone, with the installation of the development’s major structures now complete.

This project is creating a 1km-long river crossing that will connect McCallum Park, Heirisson Island, and Point Fraser, located east of Perth within the state.

The project aims to deliver two 6m-wide cable-stayed bridges over the Swan River, enhancing connectivity, safety, and amenities for pedestrians and cyclists travelling to and from the city.

Construction commenced last year, and with all 16 bridge modules and pylons now in position, the project is on track for its expected completion in late 2024.

Work now focuses on the finalisation of the bridge structures, which will feature both functional and decorative lighting.

The Australian and WA governments are jointly funding the project, which is estimated to support approximately 700 jobs annually during the construction phase.

WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said: “This is going to be Western Australia’s most iconic bridge – a stunning new river crossing with state-of-the-art lighting, and incredible structures like the 50m-tall cable-stayed boomerang pier. More importantly, it will provide some 3,000 pedestrians with safer access across the river, with the existing path on the Causeway Bridge well beyond its capacity.

“This new infrastructure makes walking and riding safer and convenient, encouraging people to consider more active transport modes. The new structures will also create new spaces for people to recreate and enjoy, especially on Heirisson Island, which has long been an underutilised natural asset in our city.”

WA is also investing in new urban and landscaping designs at McCallum Park, Heirisson Island, and Point Fraser.

The landscaping initiative includes the planting of 90,000 shrubs and the addition of 200 new trees at McCallum Park, 350 new trees on Heirisson Island, and 140 new trees at Point Fraser.
