Castle, a construction services company, has been appointed by South Tyneside Council to undertake the construction of the new South Tyneside College campus in South Shields, UK, marking a step in the college’s relocation plan.

South Tyneside College is set to move from its current Westoe site to a new 15,000m² campus in the heart of South Shields’ town centre, with Castle selected to undertake the construction following a competitive tender process.

The company will commence preconstruction services in anticipation of a mid-year on-site start date.

In the coming months, Castle will work closely with South Tyneside Council and other stakeholders to finalise the project’s detailed designs.

South Tyneside Council leader and councillor Tracey Dixon said: “We’re delighted to welcome Castle on board. They have a proven track record of successfully delivering on projects such as this.

“As a local firm, their appointment will create jobs and boost the borough’s economy.

“Momentum is building on this project now and people will start to see some activity on-site over the coming weeks.”

The project received planning permission in 2023, and demolition works have already been completed to clear the way for development.

Public consultations have shown support for the relocation, with more than 80% of respondents in favour, citing benefits such as a ‘livelier’ town centre and a boost for local businesses.

The new campus will feature a main entrance on King Street with a double-height glass atrium, and a secondary entrance on Barrington Street, which will connect to a refurbished Grade II-listed building included in the scheme.

The college secured prior funding for the project, with a £22m ($27.5m) contribution from the UK Department for Education’s FE Capital Transformation Fund.

Castle co-founder and CEO Tony Lister said: “As a South Tyneside-based business we are delighted to have won the contract to deliver a project which is destined to have a profound, positive impact on the regeneration of the borough.

“The contract will enable us to employ additional staff and, whenever possible, we will call upon local suppliers and services to support our teams.”
