Capital&Centric has been selected by High Peak Borough Council for the £100m-plus (approximately $127m) regeneration project of Buxton town centre in England, UK.
As the development partner, Capital&Centric will now start work on the redevelopment of The Springs shopping centre, Spring Gardens, and Station Approach.
This development has become feasible following the council’s acquisition of the shopping centre, a purchase supported by £6.6m from the government’s Future High Street Fund in 2022, supplemented by an additional £4m from the council’s budget.
The decision to proceed with Capital&Centric was made after a thorough selection process and informed by the outcomes of a community engagement programme.
The feedback from the programme indicated a community preference for a more resilient town centre that incorporates leisure, hospitality, public space, new venues, and much-needed housing.
Capital&Centric’s vision for the site involves repurposing the 1980s indoor shopping centre to accommodate hundreds of new homes, workspaces, and independent shops, along with bars and cafés.

By GlobalDataThe plan also seeks to improve pedestrian access from Spring Gardens to the area’s rail station and to enhance the River Wye area, creating green public spaces for outdoor activities.
The domestic developer, with a portfolio that includes the Kampus garden neighbourhood in Manchester and the redevelopment of Farnworth town centre in Bolton, will begin refining the scheme in preparation for a planning application expected to be submitted in roughly ten months.
Atkins, an engineering services company, is also involved in the project.
Community input has been a significant component of the project’s planning stages, with nearly 750 locals providing feedback during the engagement process.
This feedback will be instrumental in shaping the detailed proposals, which are set for public consultation in early 2025.
The timeline for the project indicates that construction could start in 2026-27, with an aim to complete the redevelopment by 2029.
Capital&Centric managing director John Moffat said: “Surrounded by the Peak District National Park, Buxton’s a town with so much going for it – from its stunning Georgian and Victorian architecture, to its healing spa waters and buzzing food and drink scene.
“The shopping centre is in an amazing location right in the heart of the town, with a huge opportunity to revitalise the spaces for shops, cafés and bars whilst bringing in new people to live here.”
