Camden Council in the UK has initiated the construction of two new hostels aimed at providing immediate temporary accommodation for individuals facing homelessness.

This project is part of Camden’s 15-year local investment programme, focusing on council homes, schools, and community facilities. It aims to tackle the English capital’s housing issues, where approximately 175,000 people live in temporary accommodation.

The hostels are being developed on Camden Road and Chester Road and will offer a total of 89 self-contained units.

Each unit will be equipped with its own kitchen and bathroom, ensuring residents have access to secure living spaces.

These facilities will be made available for individuals facing eviction, life-altering events, or fleeing domestic violence.

The funding for this project includes a €1.5m ($1.54m) grant from the UK government’s Brownfield Land Recycle Fund for preliminary works.

Additionally, Camden has secured €4.6m from the Local Authority Housing Funding scheme to support the project’s delivery.

Morgan Sindall Construction has been appointed as the contractor for the project, with an estimated completion date set for mid-to-late 2026.

Morgan Sindall Construction London area director Richard Dobson said: “This project is incredibly important to the people of Camden, helping to ease the strain that homelessness has on families in the borough. It means a lot for the team to be part of developing Camden Hostels, where our work can help provide a warm shelter and safe roof over the heads of people who need it.

“Overall, we can’t wait to see the units come to life for the community. We’re also looking forward to continuing our close and collaborative relationship with Camden Council, which has been built up over a number of other projects in the borough, during this development.”

Last October, Camden Council appointed Ballymore and Lateral as joint development partners to create new affordable homes at Camley Street within the borough.
