India’s Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will build the world’s highest tunnel at Shinku La Pass at 16,580 ft to link Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh.
BRO director general lieutenant general Rajeev Chaudhary stated that the construction of the tunnel joining Himachal Pradesh to Zanskar Valley in Ladakh will begin by July.
The route from Shinku La Pass from the Zanskar side towards Manali is strategically vital.
Lieutenant General Chaudhary told PTI that the Central government has already made ‘Project Yojak’ of BRO to undertake this project.
This tunnel will be finished by 2025 and is expected to transform the economy of Zanskar Valley, he added.
The south portal of the tunnel will be at Shinku La, while the north portal at Lakhang.

By GlobalDataLast month, BRO reopened the Zoji La pass, which serves as the strategic pathway between the union territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, for traffic on March 19, just 73 days following its closure, reported Frontline.
This pass is located at 11,650ft on the important Srinagar-Kargil-Leh road.
Previously, this pass, on an average remained closed for more than 135 days, with the onset of winter.
Due to sub-zero temperatures and the heavy snowfall, this pass was earlier closed from the end of November to mid-April of the following year.
The operations to reopen the pass commenced on 15 February.
Snow clearance operations were undertaken from both sides of the pass under Project Beacon and Project Vijayak of BRO.
