US-based construction company Bechtel has completed construction on Cricket Valley Energy Center, a 1.1GW combined-cycle plant in Dover, New York.
The power plant uses advanced emissions-control technology to generate the most-efficient power in the US.
The Cricket Valley Energy Center was developed by Advanced Power and was built at a total cost of $1.58bn. It generates enough energy to power a million homes across the New York state.
Construction on the project started in July 2017 and about 1,100 jobs were created during the construction phase. The project had also contributed significantly to the local economy by awarding more than $400m in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts to local businesses and spending an additional $8m with 147 local suppliers.
As the plant is now operational, it will be supported by a permanent staff of 25.
Advanced Power CEO Tom Spang said: “Every day, on every project, Bechtel has brought their A game, partnering with us and continuously striving to build better, faster, and safer as we strive to advance a sustainable energy future. Today, that attitude has brought power to one-million more homes in New York state.”

By GlobalDataBechtel stated the power-generating facility was designed and constructed, keeping in mind the needs of the community, where in visual and noise impacts were minimised for the surrounding residents.
The Cricket Valley Energy Center is powered by an efficient, environmentally responsible process of converting clean-burning natural gas into electricity. The facility uses three combustion turbines, each paired with a heat recovery steam generator and steam turbine generator.
The combustion turbines, heat recovery steam generators, steam turbines and other equipment were supplied by General Electric. The plant is also equipped with the latest emissions-control technology that can significantly reduce emissions.
Bechtel project manager at Cricket Valley Joe Collins said: “The Cricket Valley Energy Center is a significant advancement in the goal of delivering more reliable low-carbon energy to New Yorkers. We are proud to support Advanced Power as a valued partner in moving the industry toward more environmentally safe technologies.
“There is no silver bullet to achieving net-zero, but we continue working with our customers to help the industry move faster in that direction.”
