Network Rail has appointed construction company BAM as principal contractor for the new southern entrance at Sunderland’s railway station in the UK.
The latest move follows planning approval granted by Sunderland City Council for the revamp of the station in July.
BAM secured the contract through the Network Rail Framework.
Featuring a glass wrap around design, the entrance will include a new ticket office and reception, waiting areas, cafes, retail space, public toilets and a new mezzanine level which will have office space for railway industry staff.
The construction of southern entrance at the railway station is the first phase of a six-year programme which will involve reimagining the northern entrance and platform-level works to increase the capacity of the station.
Four tracks and four platforms will also be constructed to separate Nexus and Metro from mainline services.

Additionally, the existing southern entrance will be demolished to construct a new statement building, overlooking Market Square.
BAM Nuttall project director Rob Storrie said: “We know that this project has been a long-time in the making for Sunderland’s rail passengers and we’re delighted to get the green light to proceed. Our priority throughout will be to deliver this project safely and with minimum of disruption to passengers.
“Working with Network Rail and train operators, we will be putting temporary ticketing and access measures in place within the next few weeks before dismantling of the old station begins. We hope that the new station will be a welcome change for all passengers.
“The building features a glazed façade that will help create a bright welcoming concourse. It will provide a much more fitting gateway to Sunderland and we hope that it will encourage even greater use of the railway in the North East.”
Sunderland City Council is working in partnership with Northern Rail, Nexus, Network Rail, and Grand Central on the project to redevelop the complete railway station to create an integrated public transport network to meet the future needs.
