BAM Infra Nederland, part of BAM Group, has commenced works on the first phase of renewal for the Schiphol Plaza bus station at the Schiphol airport in the Netherlands.

The project is being carried out for Project MKS – Multimodal Hub Schiphol (MHS), a partnership involving the Netherlands’ Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management, the Municipality of Haarlemmermeer, the Amsterdam Transport Region, NS, ProRail, and Schiphol.

Since the 1990s, when the current public transport interchange and plaza were constructed, there has been a significant rise in public transport usage, noted Schiphol.

To accommodate this increase, the MHS project is now concentrating on upgrading the site’s bus station and train platforms to provide a safe hub that can support increased capacity in the future.

In December 2024, ProRail appointed BAM Infra Nederland to build three new fixed staircases, connecting the bus platform directly to the rail platforms at the site.

Scheduled to start next month and be completed by mid-2026, these staircases are designed to ease the flow of rail passengers and alleviate congestion in Schiphol Plaza.

The redevelopment will see the current bus stops replaced by a sheltered bus platform with 20 stops.

Additionally, a new bicycle parking facility with a capacity for 500 bikes will be added, improving Schiphol’s accessibility via public transport.

The surrounding roads will be adapted and linked to the new station, with the updated transport hub set to be operational by 2027.

BAM is executing the construction works sustainably, employing electric cranes, loaders, and hand tools. These measures not only reduce environmental impact but also create a quieter working environment, the company said.

Additionally, charging points for this equipment have been installed on-site.

BAM MKS Bus project director Jeroen Sijtsma said: “It’s fantastic to work on such a dynamic, multimodal hub as Schiphol. We are building while public transport operations continue, meaning passengers are moving around our construction site. At BAM, we are fully committed to sustainable construction.

“By using electric equipment and smart solutions, we minimise disruption for public transport passengers and reduce environmental impact, all while creating a modern, futureproof bus station at Schiphol Plaza. And thanks to the use of electric machinery, passengers are also exposed to less emissions.”
