Balfour Beatty Investments has initiated construction on the West Slope Residences, a new student accommodation project for the University of Sussex in the UK.
The commencement follows the achievement of the project’s financial close in December 2023.
Balfour Beatty Investments has signed a 54-year contract to design, build, finance, and maintain the new accommodation.
In 2022, Brighton & Hove City Council approved plans for the construction of this student housing and associated facilities.
Balfour Beatty Investments managing director Ion Appuhamy said: “The West Slope Residences is the most ambitious development programme the University of Sussex has undertaken in recent years, and will significantly contribute to and enhance the student experience.
“Building on the success of the East Slope Residences project which we completed back in 2020, we now look forward to providing an additional campus for students whilst simultaneously showcasing our extensive experience in the design, funding and construction of high-quality accommodation and amenities.”

By GlobalDataThe student accommodation is expected to be ready for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The West Slope Residences will feature 1,899 bedrooms, a health and well-being centre, and various catering and retail facilities tailored for students.
Balfour Beatty will leverage modular building techniques that will see the construction of the modular steel frame and bedroom units off-site.
This method is expected to reduce carbon emissions by minimising lorry movements and material deliveries to the site.
At the peak of construction, Balfour Beatty plans to employ 450 individuals, including approximately 50 apprentice and graduate roles.
University of Sussex Special Capital Projects executive director Allan Spencer said: “Securing this significant investment in our campus is a major milestone for the university and will deliver a key element of our ambitious Capital Programme, enhancing the experience of our students and staff through new accommodation and facilities.”
