Austal USA has initiated the construction of its latest and final assembly facility to expand its ship-manufacturing capabilities.

The project includes a new assembly building, waterfront enhancements, and a modern ship lift system.

It is aimed at bolstering the production of large steel modules for the US Navy and Coast Guard vessels.

The expansion will feature a ship lift designed for the launch of ships upon completion, as well as facilitate their return for repairs and maintenance.

Austal USA said the new assembly building is set to offer more than 192,000ft² of additional covered manufacturing space, comprising three bays to accommodate the construction of steel ships and modular components for submarines.

The ship manufacturer has engaged with Pearlson & Pearlson, Kiewit Infrastructure South Co, and Pearlson Shiplift Corporation for the project’s execution.

Once complete, the Austal USA facility in Alabama, US, will boast a 117,000ft² steel panel line, two module manufacturing facilities, and seven assembly bays, culminating in more than 400,000ft² of indoor erection space.

The site spans a total of 180 acres.

This move follows the announcement in February this year of the design phase for the shipyard’s expansion in Mobile.

Austal USA president Michelle Kruger said: “Austal USA is poised for significant growth, and this infrastructure expansion plan reflects that.

“Austal USA’s investment in this latest facility expansion project reflects our commitment to supporting the implementation of the National Defense Industrial Strategy and our commitment to investing in the Mobile region.”
