Qatar-based sporting complex Aspire Zone Foundation has started the installation of the retractable roof at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor City.
The roof weighs around 1,600t and is designed to close in a three-phase movement in 20 minutes.
Each roof truss measures a length of 94.4m and weighs between 82t and 104t. The truss is fabricated into eight pieces at the workshop and then shipped. Afterwards, it will be welded together before fixing it.
Al Bayt Stadium project director Dr Nasser Al Hajeri said: “This structure will allow more flexibility in lighting and climate conditions within the stadium, making it fit for purpose all year round.
“Installing the roof structure is a significant milestone as it completes the major lifting required on-site and means the big cranes can soon be removed.”
The Al Bayt Stadium is the proposed semi-venue for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It will have a capacity to house 60,000 people during the tournament, following which the capacity will be reduced to approximately 30,000.
