Global built environment consultancy firm Arup has been appointed to lead the £600m redevelopment of the Shotton Paper Mill in Deeside, UK.

Supported by architects AHR, Arup will work with the mill’s Turkish owner Eren Holdings for the transformation of the mill.

The redevelopment plan covers a containerboard machine building, new warehouse, dispatch facilities, a combined heat and power boiler building.

Later phases of the project will include a corrugated packaging factory and tissue factory.

Upon the completion of the transformation, the mill will be able to annually produce up to 750,000 tonnes of cardboard and also recycle all wastepaper produced in Wales.

For the first phase, which is expected to become completely operational in 2024, the Arup team will offer project management, design, and engineering expertise.

Launched in1983, Shotton Paper Mill is now claimed to play an important role in the UK’s recycling infrastructure as it recycles paper and other recyclable materials, including household glass and plastics collected across the UK.

Arup director Andy Pennington said: “This development will create one of the most technologically advanced paper mills in the world.

“It exemplifies what’s best in sustainable development, bringing significant investment and new jobs to the Deeside area – as well as significantly increasing recycling capacity for this part of the UK.”

AHR director Gurminder Sanghera said: “AHR is delighted to collaborate with Arup to deliver this innovative, state-of-the-art facility for a client with sustainability principles embedded within its culture and production process.”

Arup and AHR have collaborated on many industrial and office development projects including The Spine in Knowledge Quarter Liverpool; and Airbus’ Wing Integration Centre in Bristol.
