Air Products has revealed its plans to develop, own, and operate a carbon capture and carbon dioxide (CO₂) treatment plant in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

To be built at the company’s existing hydrogen production plant, the facility is claimed to become the largest blue hydrogen plant in Europe.

The resulting blue hydrogen product will be supplied through Air Products’ hydrogen pipeline network system to natural gas company Exxon Mobil’s Rotterdam refinery, among other clients.

The factory is scheduled to begin operations in 2026 and will be connected to the Port of Rotterdam CO₂ Transport Hub and Offshore Storage (Porthos) system.

According to Air Products, CO₂ from its hydrogen unit and ExxonMobil’s Rotterdam refinery will be captured by its upcoming carbon capture retrofit facility.

In addition to CO₂ from other industries in the Port of Rotterdam, the captured CO₂ will be transferred to empty gas fields in the North Sea, approximately 20km off the coast, where it will be permanently deposited at a depth of more than 3km below the seabed.
