The Australian Football League (AFL) has selected construction firm John Holland as the building partner of the Marvel Stadium and stadium precinct upgrade.
The $173.7m (A$225m) redevelopment of the Marvel Stadium and Docklands precinct is intended to create a 365-day-a-year sport and entertainment hub for Melbourne.
AFL noted that the works will include revitalised eastern and southern entry points including a new ‘Town Square’ that will transform the space into a seven-day-a-week, as well as an open and accessible area.
It will also feature a new city-side extension that will have function rooms with views of both the arena and CBD.
Other upgrades include renovations to public food and beverage areas, improved lighting and technology and new male and female change rooms for athletes.
AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said: “The John Holland team will help bring our vision to life, which is to make the Marvel Stadium precinct one of the best and technologically advanced sports and entertainment destinations in the world.

AFL plans to commence upgrade work following the conclusion of the 2021 Toyota AFL Premiership Season. The work is scheduled for completion during the 2023 season.
John Holland building executive general manager David Lehmann said: “Minimising disruption during the upgrade is front-of-mind for our construction team who will ensure a smooth transition between the regular operations of the site and ‘event mode’, allowing for maximum pedestrian movement and access on any event day.”
