The African Development Bank (AfDB) has signed a financing agreement with the Government of Mozambique to provide a $34m grant for the construction of the 35km phase II of the Nambungali-Roma road.
The work, which forms part of the Mueda – Negomano Road Project, is expected to improve transport infrastructure between Mozambique and Tanzania.

Phase II of the Nambungali-Roma road is expected to facilitate trade and in promoting social inclusion of local communities in Mozambique.
AfDB said that the project’s completion will complement the recently constructed Unity Bridge to reduce travel time to the ports of Pemba in Mozambique and Mtwara in Tanzania and boost regional trade and integration between the two countries.
Mozambican Finance Minister Adriano Maleiane said: “Bridging the infrastructure gap, particularly to increase national and regional connectivity, is key to the efforts to eradicate poverty and to accelerate economic growth.”
The road project will be complemented by auxiliary works for increased social inclusion, with an additional investment of $2m in community markets, clinics and other social facilities.
AfDB has also agreed to offer technical assistance to two sector agencies Administração Nacional de Estradas (ANE) and the Fundo de Estradas (FE), providing them with the capacity to improve their operations.
The Government of Mozambique has agreed to contribute $536,000, mainly for resettlement and compensation.
Last month, Mozambique had also received a grant from AfDB to finance the Mueda-Roma Road Project as part of the Mtwara Development Corridor Phase II.
The project’s objective is to offer access and improve road transport services for people in the zone of influence of Mueda – Negomano Road.
Some of the components of the project include infrastructure investments to upgrade the bitumen surfaced standard of the Roma-Nabungale Road.
The social inclusion activities in the project include the construction of boreholes, rehabilitation of schools and primary health facilities, repair of water reticulation systems and, construction of a transformation and training centre.
