AECOM, a global infrastructure provider, has been chosen by Dragados UK to lead the design stage of new passenger tunnels at the Elephant & Castle Tube station in London, UK.
This development is part of an upgrade aimed at substantially increasing the station’s capacity, with an expected footfall rise of 25-40% by 2041.
The new tunnels are set to provide step-free access to the station’s Northern line for the first time, marking a milestone in the station’s accessibility.
Transport for London awarded the project to Dragados UK, a part of ACS Group.
AECOM will spearhead engineering services, including all tunnelling works associated with the new station box.
The company will also handle environmental aspects and stakeholder engagement services. The upgrade forms part of a broader effort to improve transport infrastructure in the capital.

By GlobalDataCollaborating with AECOM on this project are WW+P, a British architectural company, and Dr Sauer, a consultancy specialising in tunnel and ground engineering.
They will provide architectural services and tunnelling expertise, respectively. The partnership underscores the collaborative approach necessary for complex infrastructure projects of this scale.
AECOM Tunnelling Europe head Steve Woodrow said: “AECOM’s appointment as lead designer on this project serves as a testament to both the breadth of our tunnelling expertise and the strength of our ongoing relationship with Dragados UK, having worked together on the Bank Station Capacity Upgrade project.
“The upgrade to Elephant & Castle station will provide necessary futureproofing for the years ahead, helping it to meet growing passenger demand, improve services and provide greater connectivity for the local area.
“Similarly, providing step-free access to the Northern line will greatly boost accessibility and safety at the station, which was an important goal during the bidding process.”
In October 2024, AECOM was selected to provide design engineering services for Southern Water’s $4.8bn capital delivery programme in the UK.
