Sheffield City Council has selected building, construction and property management company Kier Places as its project partner to revitalise the Grade II listed Adelphi Cinema building, in the city of Sheffield, UK.

The council aims to convert the cinema into a mixed-use cultural space, catering to leisure, arts and music activities.

Opened in 1920 in the Attercliffe area of the city, the Adelphi endured bomb damage during the Second World War but remained a focal point for the community for almost five decades until its closure as a cinema in October 1967.

It then served as a bingo hall and later became a nightclub until 2000.

The building’s grandeur faded as it was relegated to a storage facility, leading to its deterioration.

In a move to preserve the city’s heritage, Sheffield City Council acquired the Adelphi in March 2023 through Levelling Up funds.

Its restoration is a cornerstone of Attercliffe’s broader regeneration strategy, which includes the development of 1,000 new homes at Attercliffe Waterside and the establishment of the National Centre for Child Health Technology at Sheffield’s Olympic Legacy Park.

Kier Places, appointed by the council under the YORbuild construction framework, is tasked with refurbishing the cinema while preserving its original art-deco frontage and other historical elements.

The preliminary phase will commence in the spring of 2025.

Kier places area manager for the North Alan Smith said: “We’re delighted to be working with Sheffield City Council on this project, bringing this iconic building back to life. The first phase of the project has started, clearing all the waste out of the building and getting it to a point where the transformation can begin.”

“A big part of what we do in Kier Places is about working closely with local communities whilst delivering on our sites. The Adelphi is an exciting project with the potential to have a really positive impact on the area and residents, and we’re looking forward to being part of the building’s new story.”
