The Province of British Colombia in Canada has awarded a contract, worth C$1.728bn ($1.31bn) to a joint venture (JV) of Spanish firm Acciona and Italian company Ghella to deliver the C$2.83bn ($2.08m) Broadway Subway Project.
Under the contract, the joint venture, named Broadway Subway Project Corporation, will design, construct and partially finance 6km of tunnelling, six underground stations and install 700m of the elevated structure.

Construction on the project is scheduled to commence in fall 2020, with commissioning planned in 2025.
British Columbia Premier John Horgan said: “As we restore the economy through BC’s Restart Plan, major infrastructure projects like the Broadway Subway line will be key to our recovery.”
The Broadway Subway Project, which is said to be a key link in Metro Vancouver’s transportation system, is a 5.7km extension of the Millennium Line. It runs from VCC-Clark Station to Broadway and Arbutus.
Vancouver mayor Kennedy Stewart said: “The Broadway corridor is the second-largest employment centre in B.C. with more than 85,000 jobs, but growing traffic congestion and transit overcrowding are impacting economic growth and the quality of life for our residents.”
The project is supported by funding from the Government of British Columbia, with contributions from the Government of Canada and the city of Vancouver.
The full team for the project comprise Acciona Infrastructure Canada/Ghella Canada as a proponent and design-build contractor; Acciona Infrastructure Canada/Ghella Canada/Parsons as systems integration contractor; and Acciona Infrastructure Canada/Ghella Canada as tunnel contractor.
Additionally, the team includes IBI Group Professional Services (Canada)/Dialog BC Architecture Engineering Interior Design Planning/Mott MacDonald Canada/Ingenieria Especializada Obra Civil e Industrial as a design contractor.
