Denmark-based 3XN and landscape architect Latz+Planner have won the competition to design the new sports arena in Olympiapark, Munich, Germany.
The sports arena will have up to 11,500 seats and serve as the future home of German ice hockey champions Munich Red Bulls and basketball champions FC Bayern Munich.
As part of the project, three additional canopied ice rinks will be constructed adjacent to the sports arena as training facilities and for recreational use.
3XN’s guiding design principle for the arena focuses on the landscape, echoing the motto of the 1972 Olympics, ‘Olympic Games in the green’.
The project also adds contemporary indoor and outdoor sports facilities for visitors to the park.
3XN senior partner and design head Jan Ammundsen said: “Throughout the design process, we have consistently sought to consider and understand the thinking that shaped the original design often pausing to ask ourselves, what would Günter Behnisch have done.

By GlobalData“It was important for us to create a flexible and versatile arena with a strong identity that shows respect towards the history and vision of Olympiapark.”
The sports arena features an asymmetrical shape and height, and its oval and organic structure mirrors the curves of the surrounding landscape.
The building also contains three training rinks, changing rooms, offices, a rooftop bar, a cafe and an underground car park.
3XN has designed the sports arena to provide an intense visual experience for all spectators. With a simple expression and a strong identity, it is expected to become a distinctive new landmark in Olympiapark.
