Residential building

Canary Wharf Group (CWG) has secured planning approval from Tower Hamlets Council to construct a 58-storey residential tower on the London Docklands site in the UK.

The tower is planned to be built on the Newfoundland site and will house 566 suites and one, two and three-bedroom apartments.

CWG said the apartments will be 11ft ‘floor-to-floor’, allowing for greater ceiling heights than those at other residential towers in the surrounding area.

Plans also feature 14,360ft² of retail space, 36,300ft² of external and 16,000ft² of internal amenity space, which will include a health club and spa.

Designed by Horden Cherry Lee Architects, Newfoundland’s facade will be a diamond design that provides views of the surrounding streets and buildings, enhanced by the facility’s waterfront location at the western end of West India Middle Dock.

"The tower will house 566 suites and one, two and three-bedroom apartments."

CWG noted that, apart from the housing units on-site, it will also build about 280 affordable off-site housing units at Lovegrove Walk, Barchester Street and Burdett Road.

Construction is anticipated to commence this summer with completion planned in 2018.

CWG chairman and chief executive officer George Lacobescu said the tower will offer residential space within the Canary Wharf estate and adjacent to its 800,000ft² of retail and transport modes.

"The Newfoundland development, together with the plans recently submitted for land to the east of the existing estate, enhances Canary Wharf’s reputation as one of Europe’s prime mixed-use destinations."

CWG said the development is part of the on-going diversification of its portfolio, which has seen it move both beyond the estate with joint ventures at 20 Fenchurch Street and the Shell Centre.
