Australian architecture firm Bates Smart has been selected to design a $500m, 90-storey residential tower in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia.

The Aspire tower is part of the $2bn Parramatta Square development and would house two commercial buildings.

Independent jury including Parramatta City Architect Kim Crestani and NSW Government Architect Peter Poulet selected Bates Smart to design the tower.

Project developer Walker chairman Lang Walker said: "Bates Smart has created an iconic and innovative design concept for the centrepiece of one of the country’s largest urban renewal projects."

The proposed development will have 700 apartments, a 150-room hotel, sky deck, community facilities, a civic building, community centre as well as a library.

Walker hopes to lodge development approvals for the tower by June 2016.

The development application will incorporate a stage one 70-storey tower, and a stage two application would be lodged for 90-storey building in the future after completing discussions with the Federal Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Walker plans to lodge further approvals for two neighbouring commercial towers, which were designed by Johnson Pilton Walker.

The company launched the design competition for the Aspire tower in January 2016 and received submissions from more than ten national and international design studios.

The four architectural firms that participated in the competition were Bates Smart; Fender Katsalidis; DBI Design and PTW Architects.

Construction of the building is expected to be completed in 2019.
