Here are Europe’s five largest hydrogen construction projects that were initiated in Q1 2023, according to GlobalData’s construction projects database.
1. Lysekil Green Hydrogen Plant
The project involves the construction of a 200MW to 500MW fossil-free, water electrolysis-based hydrogen production facilities in Lysekil, Vaestra Goetaland, Sweden.
Construction work started in Q1 2023 and is expected to be completed in Q4 2024.
The project aims at Preem’s objective of producing 5 million cubic meters of biofuel by 2030, and this could lead to a reduction of transport carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent to some 20% of Sweden’s total emissions.
2. Stuttgart-Münster Hydrogen Power Plant
The project involves the construction of a hydrogen power plant in Stuttgart-Münster, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Construction work commenced in Q1 2023 and is expected to finish in Q1 2026.
The project aims to build a hydrogen power plant with modern technology and drive the trend of using green hydrogen as a climate-friendly fuel in future power plants.
3. Herning Electrolyser Plant
The project involves the construction of a SOEC electrolyzer plant covering a floor area of 23,000m2 on 7.2ha of land in Herning, Jutland, Denmark.
Construction work started in Q1 2023 and is forecast to complete in Q4 2025.
The project aims to speed up the green energy transition with solutions that decarbonize hard-to-abate industries and meet society’s need for Power-to-X solutions. It also aims to construct the world’s largest and most advanced industrial-scale electrolyzer production plant to rapidly accelerate the adoption of green solutions within Power-to-X.
4. Belfort Alkaline Electrolyser Gigafactory
The project involves the construction of an alkaline electrolysis gigafactory with an annual production capacity of one GW on a 22,000m2 area in the municipality of Belfort, located in the northeast of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, France.
Construction work commenced in Q1 2023 and is expected to be completed in Q2 2024.
This future plant will play a major role in moving electrolysis to an industrial scale, an essential condition for green hydrogen to meet the decarbonization objectives set by the French government and European authorities. Buy the profile here.
5. Blanquefort Hydrogen Fuel Cell Manufacturing Facility
The project involves the construction of a 7,000m2 hydrogen fuel cell manufacturing facilities on a 3.5ha of land in Blanquefort, Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, France.
Construction work started in Q1 2023 and is expected to be completed in Q3 2023.
The facilities is located on a 3.5ha on part of the industrial wasteland vacated by the former Ford Aquitaine Industries in Blanquefort. Buy the profile here.
