MP Boston begins construction of $1.35bn Winthrop Center

MP Boston has commenced construction of its $1.35bn Winthrop Center development in Boston, US.

Designed by Handel Architects, in collaboration with Passive House experts Steven Winter Associates, the 691ft-tall Winthrop Center will house office workspaces, residential units and retail, dining and commercial spaces, as well as a curated public gathering area.

The project is expected to be completed in 2022 and will be the fourth tallest building in Boston.


SG Blocks to partner with Tavistock for Boxi Park venue

Container-based structure developer SG Blocks is set to partner with real estate firm Tavistock to build the Boxi Park at Lake Nona in Central Florida, US.

Boxi Park is an outdoor entertainment venue featuring repurposed shipping containers.

As part of the collaboration, SG Blocks will design and prefabricate 14 containers, as well as work with a local contractor to install them.

KAI acquires Atlanta-based firm Dorsey Engineering

American architecture and engineering solutions provider KAI Design & Build (KAI) acquired Atlanta-based Dorsey Engineering for an undisclosed sum.

With the acquisition, KAI has further expanded its presence in Georgia and Florida while enabling Dorsey’s existing clients to access its expansive technologies, additional engineering consulting and design resources.

Dorsey Engineering owner Brad H Dorsey will remain with the firm to facilitate a smooth transition during the transition period, and then work as a consultant until his retirement.


La Trobe to build University City of the Future in Victoria, Australia

La Trobe University partnered with the Victoria Government to accelerate the development of the A$5bn ($3.56bn) University City of the Future on its Melbourne campus at Bundoora in Australia.

Victoria Industry and Employment Minister Ben Carroll officially launched the University City of the Future plan, which envisages the development of the 235ha campus into a hub for jobs and economic development in Melbourne’s North.

Under the partnership, La Trobe intends to convert the campus into a multi-precinct, City of the Future. The project is expected to deliver more than 20,000 new jobs and A$3.5bn ($2.49bn) in Gross Regional Product (GRP) over the next decade.


Designs unveiled for two new HS2 stations in Birmingham and Solihull

UK-based high-speed railway project High-Speed Two (HS2) unveiled the designs of two new stations in Birmingham and Solihull.

Curzon Street station is being designed by WSP UK in partnership with Grimshaw Architects and will be located in central Birmingham.

The station is expected to open with seven high-speed platforms in 2026.


YIT secures Pasila Tower Area architecture project in Helsinki

Finland-based construction and building company YIT emerged as a winner of the Helsinki High-rise Design-Build Competition for a development project in Pasila, Helsinki.

Finnish Government organisation Senate Properties and the City of Helsinki collaboratively organised the Helsinki High-rise competition to design and develop the Pasila Tower Area, as well as find an implementer for the Start-Up Area.

The Tower Area will be established in the Start-Up Area, with construction expected to commence during 2020 and 2021. YIT will now sign a contract to acquire the project’s launch area.
