The catalyst comprises a combination of zeolite, silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, or their combination as component A, and a mixed metal oxide as component Bcat. The mixed metal oxide is a layered double oxide consisting of a first metal DM (Mg, Cu, and Ni) and a second metal TM (selected from Al, Ga, In, Y, Fe, Co, Mn, Cr, Ti, V, La, Sn, Zr, or combinations thereof). The weight ratio of component A to component Bcat ranges from 1:0.05 to 1:2.5, and the catalyst can have a core-shell structure.

Furthermore, the patent claims cover the use of the catalyst for the conversion of ethanol to 1,3-butadiene, as well as a process for producing 1,3-butadiene by contacting an ethanol stream with the catalyst. The catalyst precursor for the preparation of the catalyst includes a combination of zeolite, silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, or their combination as component A, and a layered double hydroxide as component Bpre.
