The patent US12043784B2 outlines a method for producing precursor shaped abrasive particles through an extrusion process. The method involves extruding a viscous mixture, with a viscosity of at least 4,000 Pa s, into an opening of a shaping assembly. This assembly consists of two portions that are separated after the extrusion. An external force is then applied to the mixture to facilitate its removal from the opening, resulting in the formation of the abrasive particles. The mixture can include a gel composed of ceramic materials and liquids, with specific weight percentages of ceramic materials ranging from 25% to 80% and organic materials limited to 30% or less.

Further claims detail the properties of the mixture, including a storage modulus of at least 10,000 Pa, minimal changes in weight and volume during the extrusion process, and a residence time of less than 18 minutes in the shaping assembly. The mixture is characterized by a yield stress between 1,500 Pa and 50,000 Pa, and the external force applied can range from 10 kPa to 10,000 kPa. The shaping assembly's first portion is designed to receive the mixture and can be translated over the second portion at a minimum rate of 0.5 mm/s. The gel used in the mixture is described as shape-stable and may consist of various ceramic materials, including alumina and other compounds such as oxides, nitrides, and carbides.
