Comcast to build $1.2bn innovation and technology centre in Philadelphia

Media and technology company Comcast, in collaboration with Liberty Property Trust (LRY) revealed plans to build a new $1.2bn, 59-storey Comcast Innovation and Technology Centre in Philadelphia, US.

Designed by UK architect Foster + Partners, the new 1,121ft tower will be built on the 1800 block of Arch Street in the Centre City district of downtown Philadelphia, alongside Comcast’s global headquarters.

The glass and steel building will have a rentable space of 1.5 million square feet, which will house a new Four Seasons hotel and a block-long lobby with a glass-enclosed indoor plaza, complementing Comcast Centre’s existing outdoor plaza.

Arabtec wins $1.55bn Aqaba resort contract in Jordan

Arabtec Construction secured a AED5.7bn ($1.55bn) contract to build a themed entertainment resort in Aqaba, Jordan.

The 74ha project is being developed by an international fund, Red Sea Astrarium, and will be built in the Aqaba special economic zone.

Red Sea Astrarium will house four hotels with more than 2,000 rooms and retail, dining and entertainment waterfronts.

Kleindienst starts work on Heart of Europe project in Dubai

Property developer Kleindienst began construction on the Heart of Europe project on Dubai’s Palm Islands.

The project will be a cluster of six small islands forming part of The World, which will be constructed in the shape of a world map. The project is located 4km off the coast of Dubai and is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2016.

Heart of Europe’s six islands are named as Mainland Europe, Monaco, Sweden, Switzerland, St Petersburg and Germany, while six further islands will be added later, namely Sochi, Belgium, Luxembourg, Geneva, Monte Carlo and Poland.

The project will feature luxury hotels, restaurants and retail spaces and serviced villas intended for private sale.

New head office of Federation of Korean Industries opens in Seoul

The Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) of South Korea opened its new head office in Seoul designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG).

The 50-storey, 240m tower features a unique exterior wall design, developed specifically for the project.

The skin of the building will help to reduce internal heating and cooling loads, as well as collect energy through photovoltaic panels integrated into the spandrel areas of the south-west and north-west facades.

Mumbai Airport opens new Terminal 2

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) in India opened its new integrated terminal two (T2), designed by architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

T2 cost Rs55bn ($892.8m) to build, spans 4.4 million square feet and can process 40 million passengers per year operating for 24 hours a day.

Incorporating international and domestic passenger services in addition to cargo, ground handling, security, retail under one roof, the new the four-storey terminal is claimed to optimise terminal operations and cut passenger walking distances.

Cushman & Wakefield consortium wins Park Russia project

Park Russia

An international consortium led by Cushman & Wakefield won the masterplan and business strategy competition for a cultural park in Moscow, named Park Russia.

The consortium consists of five UK-based masterplanners, including Gillespies, Buro Happold, Rider Levett Bucknall, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Fourth Street Place Consultants.

Park Russia would provide a significant tourism and cultural development outside of the country’s capital.

The consortium includes Russian firms Strategy Partners Group, NEBA Cultural, Terra Viva, Country Format, and other specialists, including Puy du Fou International (France), MaxMakers (Switzerland), Jack Rouse Associates (USA), Ray Hole Architects (UK), Populous (UK) and Conventional Wisdom (USA).

KPF unveils Ziraat Bank headquarters design in Turkey

US-based architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) unveiled the design of a pair of 40-storey and 46-storey towers that will serve as the new headquarters for Ziraat Bank in Istanbul, Turkey.

The 400,000m² Ziraat Bank headquarters will be the centrepiece of the new Istanbul International Financial Centre (IIFF).

KPF worked with local architects A Tasarim Mimarlik and planners KKS to design the new headquarters.

London’s tallest residential tower is completed

The Tower

The Tower, One St George Wharf, has been completed on the bank of the river Thames in Nine Elms, London, UK.

The Tower was designed by architectural firm Broadway Malyan and built by contractor Brookfield Multiplex. The 50-storey building has 213 residential units, all of which have been sold.

The 320,000ft² building stands at just over 180m and features a gym, spa, swimming pool, a business lounge and sky gardens.

Work to start on first phase of $1bn International Medical City project in Oman

Work on the first phase of the $1bn International Medical City (IMC) project in Salalah, Oman, is expected to start within the next few.

Saudi-based Apex Medical Group, which is overseeing the project, said significant headway has been made in preparing the groundwork, paving the way to start the first phase of the development.

International Medical City will be constructed on an 866,000m² site leased from the Ministry of Tourism.
