NCC has entered into a long-term strategic partnership with LKAB for construction projects in Malmfälten, also known as the Swedish Ore Fields.

The companies have also signed letters of intent for the projects. LKAB is preparing for what is said to be one of the largest industrial projects in the country’s history.

LKAB president and CEO Jan Moström said: “We are taking the next step toward realising our plans through a long-term collaboration with NCC.

“By collaborating closely from the start, NCC can contribute expertise throughout the planning process as well as building structural capital, working with knowledge transfers between projects, and taking overall responsibility for these large construction projects.”

The collaboration between NCC and LKAB will focus on leveraging shared expertise, information, and know-how from the outset to develop future construction projects.

The initial phase involves the construction of a direct reduction plant and its accompanying infrastructure at Malmberget, with work already underway.

NCC’s Green Industry Transformation business area has initiated planning efforts for this venture.

NCC president and CEO Tomas Carlsson said: “The industry is facing a systemic shift and needs totally new and different skills compared with the past.

“By getting involved in the process for these pioneering development projects at an early stage, we – as contractors – can contribute both resources and special expertise to optimise implementation. We have an exciting time ahead of us with LKAB.”

The projects’ time schedules and costs have not been finalised, and therefore have not yet been included in NCC’s orders received.

Last month, NCC signed an agreement with the City of Vantaa for the construction of a swimming centre in Finland, which is the first project within the wider Elmo Sport Park development.
