Carney said: “CDOT worked closely with the 35th Ward and community stakeholders throughout the design of this project, and we look forward to seeing it come to life.
“This project represents a collaborative effort to transform our streets and create a safer and more inviting Milwaukee Avenue for the Logan Square and Avondale communities.”
The project will include the reconfiguration of Logan Square, aimed at increasing new public outdoor spaces and improving pedestrian access.

Adjacent to the Logan Square Blue Line Station, the project will also see the creation of ‘La Placita’, a new plaza designed to serve as a community hub.
Furthermore, the project encompasses a full roadway reconstruction, which includes the refurbishment of sidewalks, kerbs, and gutters.
It will also incorporate wider sidewalks and kerb extensions, facilitating outdoor dining spaces for local restaurants.
Additionally, the project will include the modernisation of traffic signals, among others to improve safety and traffic flow.
Johnson said: “The Milwaukee Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project is not just about rebuilding a roadway; it is about creating a safer, more inviting space that supports local businesses, enhances pedestrian safety, and celebrates the cultural heritage of this community.”
Construction work is anticipated to be completed by mid-2026.
